Natural oil often seeps into the ocean in the LA Basin…and it routinely affects shore-loving birds like the common murre from November to May. This year, however, the staff at the International Bird Rescue is seeing an influx of oiled birds…which makes officials and rescue staff scratch their heads in wonder.
For a while, the birds trickled in, but since Feb. 1, the staff has received 51 birds that were washed and in the process of being waterproofed and rehabbed.
